Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that provides a benefit to our teeth. Fluoride strengthens our teeth to make them more resistant to bacterial attacks. It is naturally found in most water sources, but over the past several decades, fluoride has been added to our public water systems to improve levels to help prevent cavities.
“Fluoride varnish seems to be an effective treatment for the reversal of incipient carious lesions in primary and permanent dentition…” February 2016 JADA
Fluoride serves as the primary agent against cavities and prevents them by three mechanisms: 1) inhibiting demineralization of tooth enamel, 2) enhancing remineralization of tooth enamel prior to lesion progression, and 3) inhibiting the enzyme activity of cariogenic bacteria.
